Telescope Description

The Sky-Watcher 100/900 Star Discovery ED Doublet Black Diamond Refractor Telescope with computerised mount / tripod is a telescope offering bright & wide sky in a single view able to deliver dramatic coal-black skies, high contrast planetary views and deep sky phenomenon.  With a focal ratio of f/9.0 it also provides Astrophotographers with low colour dispersion as well as optical speed and photographing objects such as Andromeda is particularly ideal with its 900mm focal length.

Observing with the Black Diamond 100ED

This telescope with its well corrected chromatic aberration is ideal for high-contrast planetary observing.  With a 100mm aperture and 900mm focal length, this doublet ED telescope has high performance optics and collects about 200 times more light than the naked eye with an exit pupil of 7mm. The use of FPL-53 ED glass means that there is almost no colour aberration and an aperture ratio of f9 means this is reduced even further.

ED glass (extra low dispersion) has very low colour dispersion and a low refractive index. Excellent correction of chromatic aberration is achieved by the combination of this special glass with other optical glass. Improved contrast is achieved by the use of crown glass from the German firm of Schott. The metallic high transmission coating applied to the lenses ensures high light transmission. Star clusters are especially aesthetically pleasing, with images very nearly achieving the 'pin sharp stars' often described when observing through refractors. Sharp images across the entire image can be achieved in conjunction with an optional field flattener. The tube is equipped with a robust 2 inch Crayford focuser with a 1:11 reduction ratio for fine focusing - especially important for astrophotography.

Schott Glass By using the premium Schott Glass, an FPL-53 ED Glass element and the state of the art multi-coating, Sky-Watcher ED Doublet APO are free from the unfocused violet light (Chromatic Aberration).

Metallic High-Transmission Lens Coatings Each air-to-glass lens surface has exotic anti-reflection metallic coatings applied to ensure optimum light through-put of approaching 99.5%. The proprietary Sky-Watcher “Metallic High-Transmission Coatings” (MHC) are the finest photon anti-rejection coatings in their class.

Light-Baffled Optical Systems The objective lens cell is light-baffled to reject stray, unfocused light. The draw tube is likewise baffled to optimum contrast. The tube interior is flat blackened to help prevent unfocused internal light reflections from reaching the focal plane.

Precision 2” Dual Speed Crayford Focuser as Standard Optical focus is achieved by means of a mechanically ultra-smooth, backlash-free, precision 2” Dual Speed Crayford Focuser-assembly. This focuser offers fine and ultra-fine focusing adjustments.

Tube Materials  The optical tube material is rolled steel, powder-coated reflective gloss black with gold fleck accent. The front and back cells are -aluminium painted white, or black cast.

Star Discovery Mount  The mount is not only designed to drive your telescope, it is also a platform for cameras and video recorders. Perfect for lightweight astrophotography, time lapse photography, wide view and panorama photography, video panning and many more activities.

The Star Discovery Mount is controlled by the SynScan Ver. 4 GOTO Handset  This handset allows you to drive the your mount to any celestial object selected from its huge 42,000+ database, including Messier, IC, NGC and Caldwell Catalogues, Planets, Named Stars, Double Stars, Variable Star and even Astronomer Defined objects like new comets.
